A protest led by women has started across Iran in response to the death of a 22-year-old woman in police custody.
Kurdish native Masha Amini was arrested in Tehran on September 13, allegedly by members of Iran's civil police, after she violated the dress code. Authorities reportedly told Amini that her headscarf was worn too loosely, according to Sky News.
She was in a coma for three days and died on September 16.
Activists and Amini's family claim that the police assault that injured her ultimately led to her death. However, Iranian authorities say they did not molest her and say Amini died of a sudden heart attack.
After Amini's death, thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protest. As of Thursday, protests have reached at least 80 cities and towns across the country.
Meanwhile, the Iranian government banned access to many apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp, and cut off internet access to several telecommunication networks.
Mean while state television said 17 people had been killed in the riots, but a human rights group said at least 31 people had been killed.
